The performance of Greggs since Ken McMeikan announced his resignation as chief executive at the end of 2012 has been pretty dreadful. There have been three profit warnings, blaming weather that was either too hot or too cold.

Greggs tends to do well when the high streets where it has shops are thriving, allowing them to pick up passing trade. When it is too hot or too cold, shoppers tend not to go out.

At present, though, everything seems to be moving in the right direction, to the extent that the company had to issue an unexpected trading update yesterday warning analysts that their forecasts for the current year were too low.
